A Friend in Walled Lake Writes

While going through some papers of my mother’s files, which recently passed away, I came across an unusual piece. It is a “RABINEAU’S ALMANAC for 1847”, written by Allen A Rabineau of Monroe Mich. It is an 8 ¾” x 6” 18 page, string bound book with a braded loop in the upper left corner, probably to hang it up.

It appears he had a 3 story store on Front Street, according to a picture drawing, and sold a variety of items from Dry Goods, Clothing, including Brogans, Buskins and Gaiters to name a few, Hardware and Groceries.

All I could find on the internet were:

Two articles under Clinton Co, MI—General Land Office Records – 1807 – 1907, and the same for Allegan Co.

An article from the Journal of Michigan Legislative House of Representatives – 1847, page 272 where Allen A Rabineau was authorized to build a dam across the Raisin River in the county of Monroe.

An article in the Joint Documents of the Senate and House of Representatives at the Annual Session of 1845. Stating he was a Colonel Com’d’g 36th Reg’t November 10, 1942. And Volunteer Infantry Company 1st Battalion Frontier Guards 18th Reg.Monroe City August 13th, 1883.

Do any readers have any additional information on Allen A. Rabineau?

Mark Anderson Writes: I found information about Allen A. Rabineau. This information comes from the 1840 and 1850 Census of Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan.

The information on the 1790-1840 U.S. Census is very sketchy at best. These years lists only the head of house hold is mentioned by name, and ages within the house hold with headings males, ages 0-5, 5-10 etc., females are listed the same way with a numeral of how many fall into that age category.

The 1850 census is more like our form we use today. All house hold members names are given, ages, sex, occupation, value of home, and place of birth. I wasn't able to find Allen A. on the 1830, 1860, & 1870 Michigan Census. I did see a lot of Rabineau's listed in New York no doubt related; some how. So, with that thought in mind let's start.

The 1840 Monroe, Monroe County,Michigan Census reads like this:

 Allen A. Rabineau male 30-40; females, 10-15, 30-40.

The 1850 Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan gives considerly more: See line 41 Allen A. Rabineau age 42, male, occupation Merchant, value of home $8,800.00, place of birth New York.   See line 42 Mary F. Rabineau age  40, female, place of birth; New York. Next page see line 1  Mary F. Rabineau age    9, female, place of birth; Michigan.

See line 2 Allen L. Rabineau age  8/12  male, place of birth; Michigan. See line 3 Fr??a? Laiv age 17 female, place of birth Germany, perhaps a live in baby sitter, or a housekeeper.

NOTE: The pages are very readable with superb detail if you print the files on a modern laser printer.  The web keepers experience is that this is much better than reading the document form the screen.  I assume a modern ink - jet type printer would work as well.  Considering the age of the document, it is in good condition and the scanning work reflects the best practice for our needs.
