Cholera may become to official disease of Downtown Monroe.  Downtown business persons feel that they can legally gerrymander and pay for a small graveyard to help the history tourist’s edification in the hope that they will then wish to eat downtown.  

In your web Keeper's opinion, this is the desire of political hacks who under the guise of misguided preservationists insist in erecting and repairing gravestones outside of the DDA Downtown Development Authority's area of tax capture.  If the DDA has captured excessive amounts of tax incremental financing funds, and there is evidence that they have the money can better be used repairing our antiquated water system. A good water system is why we are not presently afflicted with cholera.

Causes and Symptoms of Cholera

Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but sometimes it can be severe.

Cholera has been very rare in industrialized nations for the last 100 years; however, the disease is still common today in other parts of the world, including the Indian subcontinent and sub-Saharan Africa.

Although cholera can be life-threatening, it is easily prevented and treated. In the United States, because of advanced water and sanitation systems, cholera is not a major threat; however, everyone, especially travelers, should be aware of how the disease is transmitted and what can be done to prevent it.  Minnesota Department of Health
