American Legion WW-I Memorial
The story of the monument is found in a small front page article of the Monroe Evening News; dated Saturday, June 1, 1929 and reads as follows; Memorial Emblem Is Placed at Park One of the newest memorials in Monroe is the American Legion emblem painted
on stones embedded in cement at Soldiers' and Sailors' park, East Front street.
It was completed just in time for public inspection on Memorial Day. The emblem,
donated by the Legion auxiliary, has a silver star on a field of gold and brown,
and is in honor of the United States soldiers who died in the World War. It
displaces flowers which were planted for the first two years in the nine-foot
bed granted by the city for the memorial purpose. The emblem has the advantage
of greater endurance auxiliary members explained.
